Taught medicine at Glagow (1751-55). Became a professor of chemistry at Edinburgh (1755). Chair of the department of physic at Edinburgh (1773-89).

Born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Married Anna Johnstone in 1747, had issue.
