Officer in the Prussian service. Claimed to be a captain at the head of a corps of dragoons in the service of America who had been wounded in battle, captured, and imprisoned by the British (1779).
Also claimed to be Washington’s aide-de- camp. A committee report presented to Congress contradicted Wulffen’s assertions. It stated that he was found unqualified by von Steuben and was nominated but not confirmed by Congress for a lieutenant’s commission. Congress apparently gave von Steuben money to send Wulffen back to Europe.
Brother of M. A. Sonnemaens.
Alternate form of the name: Wolffe.
