British political writer.
Worked in ordnance office. Served in British navy during the Revolutionary War. Resided in Liège, Brussels, and Paris (1783-91). Friend of David Garrick, William Pitt, and the marquis de Lafayette. Published numerous political essays and two comic operas.
Son of Jefferson Miles. Married (2) Harriet Watkinson (1803); five sons, as well as a daughter by his first wife.
