Traded with Indians at Pittsburgh, in partnership with his brother Richard. Captain, then major, of the Second Pennsylvania Battalion (1776). Lieutenant-colonel of the Fourth Pennsylvania Regiment (September 1776); commander (January 1779).

Son of Thomas and Elinor Butler of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Married; two sons.
