Gardoqui, Don Diego de (1735-1798)

Bilbao merchant.

Son and partner of Joseph Gardoqui. Their firm, Gardoqui & fils, provided the United States with financial aid and military supplies during the Revolution.

Representative for Floridablanca, the Spanish chief minister, in his negotiations with John Jay (1780). Consul general in London (1783-85). Chargé d’affaires, Spain’s first official diplomatic representative in the United States (1785-89).

Samuel Vaughan proposed his membership to the American Philosophical Society (1788).
