Aide-major (1772), then captain (1773) in the regiment of Auvergne. Went to the United States as aide-major general in his father’s expeditionary corps (1780). Chevalier de St.- Louis (1783). Maréchal de camp (1791). Appointed commandant des îles du Vent and governor of St.-Domingue during the French Revolution.
Son of Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau. Married Marie- Françoise-Eléonore de Harville de Traisnel (1779).
