Held various public offices in Connecticut, including superior court judge and Speaker of the Assembly. Deputy Governor (1754-66). Governor (1766-69). Like Franklin, a delegate to the 1754 Albany Congress.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut. Married in 1724 to Mary Woodbridge; had issue.
