Recommended by Arthur Lee, but rejected by Franklin and Deane, as the courier who would carry the American Commissioners’ dispatches to Congress (1778).

Sailed to America carrying private letters from Lee which denounced the conduct of his fellow commissioners and of William Carmichael.
