A native of Mannheim, Germany, Armbruster arrived in Philadelphia (c. 1747). He and Franklin established the Philadelphische Zeitung, a German-language newspaper published from July 12, 1755 to December 31, 1757.

A financially distressed Armbruster resumed correspondence with Franklin in 1785.
