French painter and engraver.
His drawing “l’Amérique Indépendante” was translated into an engraving by Le Vasseur (1778). Hoping to dedicate this allegorical work to Franklin, he repeatedly requested that Franklin sit for a portrait so that his likeness might be imposed on the central figure in the work. Franklin declined the offer and suggested instead that Borel dedicate “l’Amérique Indépendante” to the United States Congress.
