Conkling, Joseph (b. 1739)

Merchant ship captain.

Sought Franklin’s aid after the Admiralty of Les Sables d’Olonne took possession of the Whim and its cargo.

Captain of the brigantine Whim, owned by Joseph Packwood. Transported David Mumford and his family to France in 1781. The vessel ran ashore near La Tranche-sur- Mer, on the coast of Poitou, and was brought to the Ile de Ré for repairs (July 1780). Arrived in Boston in May 1781.
