Hurd, John (1727-1809)

Boston merchant.

Traveled widely in northern New England and Nova Scotia. Settled in New Hampshire, where he served as Gov. John Wentworth’s secretary and chief justice of the province (1773). Militia colonel and New Hampshire legislator during Revolutionary War. Returned to Boston (c. 1779) as the town quartermaster. Speculated in western lands and underwrote marine insurance.

Son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Mason) Hurd. Educated at Harvard (B.A., 1747). Married (1) Elizabeth Foster (1755); two children. Married (2) Mary (Russell) Foster (1783); three children. Married (3) Rebecca Leppington (1790).
