Went with Du Coudray to the United States (1777). Rose to be a lieutenant colonel. Distinguished himself at Fort Mifflin and at Stony Point. Wounded at Germantown.
The only foreigner to whom Congress awarded a military medal. Was back in France on furlough (1780). Returned to the United States with Rochambeau as major of the regiment of Saintonge. Chevalier de Saint- Louis (1781). Colonel of the regiment of Pondichéry (1784).
Returned to France (1790). Maréchal de camp (1791).
