Philadelphia schoolmaster (1767-76). Joined the Continental army and rose to the rank of colonel. Helped survey the southwestern, western, and northern borders of Pennsylvania (1784-87). Became surveyor general of Pennsylvania (1809).

Born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Married in 1767 to Elizabeth McDowell. Married in 1777 to Elizabeth Parker; issue by both marriages.
