Son of Boston merchant Henry Bromfield. Nephew of Franklin correspondent Thomas Bromfield, with whom he lived in England for some time, beginning in 1768.

Went to France in 1778 bearing a letter of introduction from Jonathan Williams, Sr. to Franklin. He later signed, before Franklin, an oath of allegiance to the United States.
