Lodged in Passy in 1778. Plans putting him in command of a privateer owned by the Dunkirk firm Poreau, Mackenzie & Cie. fell through (1778). In anticipation of a commission, worked for John Paul Jones inspecting ships in Brest. Also served as Jones’ secretary. In 1779, Jones granted him a leave of absence to tend to private business matters.
