Glass manufacturer.
Inherited and operated his father’s glass factory at Wistarburg, Salem County, West Jersey (1752-77). Business faltered during the Revolutionary War; he advertised the factory for sale in 1780 but found no purchaser, and it failed soon after his death. Also manufactured brass buttons, as his father had done. Subscribed to Philadelphia linen factory (1764).
Quaker. Son of Caspar and Catharine (Jansen) Wistar; nephew of John Wister and cousin of Daniel Wister. Married Sarah Wyatt (1751); eight children.
