Anglican minister.

Graduated from the College of Philadelphia (1757). Ordained to the priesthood in England in 1762, and soon afterward returned to Philadelphia, where he attained great popularity by the time of the outbreak of the American Revolution.

Became chaplain of the Continental Congress, but, after spending time in jail during the British occupation of Philadelphia, he turned Loyalist and fled to England (1777). Became chaplain at a Lambeth orphan asylum.

Sought Franklin's advice on returning to America (1783). Returned to America (1792).

The son of Jacob Duché, a one time mayor of Philadelphia and Franklin correspondent.

Married Elizabeth Hopkinson, sister of Francis Hopkinson, in 1759; had issue.
