Accompanied Benjamin Franklin and William Temple Franklin to France (1776), whence he was sent to Geneva for schooling (1779).

Returned to Philadelphia (1785). Attended the University of Pennsylvania (1785-87).

Published the General Advertiser, later the Aurora (1790-98). Was arrested in July 1798 under the Sedition Act.

Born in Philadelphia. Grandson of Benjamin Franklin, son of Sarah “Sally” Franklin and Richard Bache. Married in 1791 to Margaret Hartman Markoe; four sons.
