Sea captain and double agent.

Arrived in England, out of work (1776). Selected to carry Commissioners’ dispatches from Le Havre to America (January 1777). Approached by British Lt. Col. Edward Smith, who arranged for Hynson’s ship to be intercepted at sea. The plot failed because the Commissioners decided to wait and send the dispatches by another ship. Loitered in France, ostensibly seeking a command, while attempting to gather information for the British. Stole American dispatches from John Folger and carried them to London (October 1777). Awarded £200 pension by Crown.
