Entered French navy as a volunteer (1745). Discharged (1777).
Given command of the Flammand by Silas Deane (1778). Transported military supplies to America. Given command of the Alliance by Congress and made a citizen of Massachusetts (1778).
Joined squadron of John Paul Jones (1778), with whom he had several disputes and encounters. At Lorient, attempted to seize command of the Alliance from Jones and was eventually given command of the vesssel by Arthur Lee (1780). Removed from command during the return passage to America after he flew into a violent rage in the presence of Lee and of the crew.
