First president of the United States. Member of Virginia House of Burgesses (1759-74). Delegate to Continental Congress. Commander of Continental Army from 1775 until the end of the war.

Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Married in 1759 to Martha (Dandridge) Custis, a widow. No children of his own, although he acted as a father to the daughter and son from his wife’s first marriage.
