Lawyer and prominent Philadelphian. Father of Francis Hopkinson.
A member of the Junto and later of the American Philosophical Society. Hopkinson was also involved in the Fire Company, the Library Company, and St. John’s Masonic Lodge. Became Judge of Vice-Admiralty for Pennsylvania (1741). Later served on the Pennsylvania Provincial Council.
His obituary in the Pennsylvania Gazette (November 14, 1751), may have been written by Franklin.
