Ordained (1739). Immigrated to Pennsylvania (1746). Made extensive missionary tours of western Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia. Organized a coetus (administrative body) subject to the Dutch Reformed Church (1747).
Visited Europe to raise additional funds (1751). Superintendent of schools for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (1754-56). Military chaplain (1757-59, 1764). Pastor of the German Reformed church at Barren Hill, near Philadelphia.
Son of Paulus and Magdalena (Zollikofer) Schlatter of St. Gall, Switzerland. Educated at Leyden and Helmstedt. Married Maria Henrica Schleidorn in 1747; nine children.
