Aide de camp of the maréchal de Broglie. Abandoned the army for diplomacy after receiving the rank of colonel des grenadiers.

Ambassador to Bavaria (1776). Replaced Conrad-Alexandre Gérard as the French Foreign Minister to the United States (1779-83).

Born in Paris. Nephew of Chrétien- Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes.
