Physician, patriot, statesman.

Served in the New Hampshire Assembly (1767-75) and the Continental Congress (1774-76, 1778-79), in which he was a member of the Secret Committee. Governor of New Hampshire (1793-94).

Born in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. Married in 1754 to Mary Barton; twelve children.
