Prominent merchant in Philadelphia firm Baynton, Wharton, & Morgan, which specialized in the Indian trade. Elected to represent Philadelphia County in place of pacifist Quaker members who had withdrawn from the Assembly (1756).

Married Elizabeth Chevalier (1747). Fifteen children.
