Emigrated to Philadelphia where he practiced medicine (1756).

Became a surgeon in the British Army and served in the French and Indian War and several other campaigns (1757).

Governor of St. Vincent (1766). Under- secretary of state for American business (1766-68). Member of Parliament (1768-71). Comptroller of army accounts (1772-73). Commissary of musters in Bengal (1773).

Involved in the Ohio land dealings of the Walpole company.

Received a medical degree from Edinburgh (1755). Married in 1755 to Elizabeth Hewit, and, from c. 1768, lived with Penelope Agnew, with whom he had two children.
