Soldier, envoy to France. Son of Henry Laurens.

Served as a member of Washington’s staff (1777-79). Elected to the South Carolina assembly (1779). Resigned from the assembly and resumed his military career on the occasion of British invasion of South Carolina.

Captured by the British at Charleston (1780). Upon his release was sent to France by Congress in order to persuade the government there to give further assistance to the American war effort.

Stayed in France (where he worked with Franklin) until late 1781. Returned to America (1781). Died in battle.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina. Married in 1776 to Martha Manning.
