Physician and patriot.

Studied medicine at Edinburgh (1766-68). Returned to Philadelphia and began medical practice (1769).

Member of the American Philosophical Society. Delegate to the Continental Congress. Signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Born in Byberry, Pennsylvania. Married in 1776 to Julia Stockton. Thirteen children, of whom six sons and three daughters survived him.
