From Winthrop Sargent (unpublished)
Marietta 25th. of June 1789
Sir

Mr. Leach the Bearer of this Letter is the Son of an ancient School master of that Name in the Town of Boston. He has been some Time in this Country in the Profession of his Father and now about returning to that Metropolis for which Place he will hold himself much honoured by your Excellency’s Commands.

I have committed to him to be left with your Excellency a Continuation of such meteorological Observations as my Instruments have capacitated me for making; with a better Apparatus I would be more particular.

Mr. Leach has also with him all the Surveys that have been made for the Ohio Company (intended for the Proprietors in the City of New york) and a Plan of the City of Marietta, incribed by Order of the Company to his Excellency the Country Moustier, which Papers I have desired of him to shew your Excellency if you should be disposed to see them.

By the Gazette of Philadelphia I am advertized of being elected a Member of the Philosophical Society of that City. I receive this distinguishing Honour with great Pleasure and am desirous they should lead my Observations in this Country as may be most conducive to the Intention of their Institution. To your Excellency I hold myself indebted for the Election and beg Leave to present you with my Thanks. I have the Honour to be with the highest Respect and Esteem Sir your Excellency’s most obedient and most devoted Servant
