William Temple Franklin to Jonathan Williams, Jr. (unpublished)
Passy 4 Augt. 1781.

I received my dear Friend your favour of the 24 & 26 July. Your manner of taking three Copies is ingenious but I do not imagine it will be of great Utility, as I perceive it is necessary the Original should be wrote large & strong; & that it is impossible to write on both sides of the Paper. I imagine likewise, but I have not try’d it, that 3 Copies must be taken immediately after writing, & that if you were to write four sides of a Sheet, in the common way; the first Side written would not admit of the 3 Copies being taken.—

We have discovered since your Departure, that thin French Paper, not gumm’d called Papier de soye, will do as well as the English. I shall therefore send you a Ream as you desire, & not send for any to England. I shall pay for your Hat & charge it to you, together with the Seals &c.

Inclosed I send you Mr. Austin’s Rect. for the Money he borrowed of my Grandfather, Please to remit what remains due on said Acct:—

WTF.—
