To Rodolphe-Ferdinand Grand (unpublished)
Philada. Oct. 8. 1786
Dear Friend,

A Vessel just arrived from l’Orient brings me your Favour of the 26th July, announcing some Packages directed to me, which are not yet come on shore, but I suppose I shall have them to-morrow. I thank you for your Care in purchasing for me the History of Canals, and also for adding the Science of Canals.

I some time since wrote to desire you would sell all my Actions of the Caisse d’Escompte, for having begun building three Houses, I found I should have occasion for the Money. Accordingly I drew upon you a few Days since the following Bills, viz.

One for 3023 l.t.
One for 4000
One for 2000
the three Setts amounting to 9023 l.t. Tournois

I forget the Names of the Persons to whose Order they are payable, but they were bought of me by J.G Koch, and are at 30 Days sight. And yesterday I drew another Bill in favour of Kaighn and Attmore for £500 Sterling, payable in London, also at 30 days sight. These Drafts fully answer my present Occasions. At the End of the Year you will send me your Account. If I have overdrawn, my Interest which you will receive from my Money in the Funds, will re-imburse you with Interest. I rejoice to see the flourishing State of the Caisse d’Escompte, tho’ I have no longer any Share in it.

I thank you for the Voyage aerien of M. Tetu. There is something curious in it. The pretended Invention in Carolina for raising such Quantities of Water is unknown here, and is I believe without Foundation.

I have yet receiv’d no Letter or Account from Mr. Didot of the Cast of the Types, but in a former Letter I requested you to pay his Demand.

I am at present, Thanks to God, in very good Health, as I hope this will find you and yours, being ever, with sincere Esteem, my dear Friend, Yours most affectionately

B Franklin
