William Carmichael to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Madrid 21 Octr 1782
Dear Sir

I have been favoured with two Letters from you of the 21 & 23 Ulto. but not in due course of Post. You know with what pleasure I have always received the proofs of your Remembrance and therefore will easily Judge how welcome were your last Letters after so long a Silence. I cannot take the merit of having Contributed to your favorable reception by Mr Jay or his Lady, as I am persuaded an acquaintance with you, would have more effect than the most powerful recommendations. It has not yet been my fortune to render myself of sufficient Consequence to give importance to mine. I am not so much surprized at Mr. [S. ls] ambition, as at his persisting in the Same pursuit after having been so compleatly Defeated in his former Attempts: You need have no apprehensions of this Rival & after the Letter written by the Doctor last year, I cannot think Congress will appoint another in your place. The intelligence you give me of American Affairs in that Country & here is highly pleasing to me. Since the Month of May, I have no Intelligence from thence but what I have been favored with by the Ct. de Montmorin or recd. by private Letters. Nothing Can prove to me more effectually your friendship than an early communication to me of every thing relative to the Situation of the Affairs of my Country. I have not recd. any advice from Mr. Livingston respecting the future payment of my Salary & of course have constantly relied on the kindness & ability of your Grand Father to supply me. I do assure you that it grieves me to spend so much & do so little, but it as difficult to avoid the expence, as to affect anything of Consequence here. Lately however for the first Time I have felt the pleasure of success & I hope Time & patience will enable me to accomplish some little Affairs that have lain long on hand, which to are interesting to Individuals in America. You will have heard that the two Fleets are in the Mediterranean or rather were the 15th. Inst. Eight or nine got into Gibraltar, cheifly Transports. I would write fuller on this Subject, but I know that you must have the particulars by the Courier of the Ct. D’Artois before this Can reach you. You will also hear of the Success of our Allies in Hudsons Bay. This week I mean to go to the Escurial, where it is probable I shall remain three weeks. My Residence here is not so disagreable as it has been. I am at present well with most of the Foreign Ministers & am Invited to their Tables. I wrote some time Ago to your Grand Father for a Work written by Mr. Cumberland relative to Spain. The Embassador of France who was as curious to see it as myself, permitted me to direct its being sent to his Address by one of the Couriers of the Cabinet. When you present My compliments to him, pray do me the favor to remind him of it. I beg you to mention me in the proper manner to Mr. & Mrs. Jay to Bancroft & others who may remember me and to believe me with real Esteem Your friend & Humble Sert.
