From Benjamin Franklin(?): Memorandum on Pendulums (unpublished)

Sir Isaac Newton has determined from the Theory of Gravity that the difference of the lengths of Pendulums at the Equator and the Pole is 1,919 lines. But M. De La Place from a comparison of the actual lengths of pendulums found by observation at 10 different places, and admitting (with Newton) the Earth to be a regular Spheroid, makes that differenc 2,438 lines, and at the mean Latitude of 45 the Pendulum = 440.519 lines, Therefore in other Latitudes the lengths will be as follows

Lat. 40 = 440,307 lines
41 = 440,349
42 = 440,392
43 = 440,434
44 = 440,476
45 = 440,519
46 = 440,562
47 = 440,604
48 = 440,646
49 = 440,689
50 = 440.739

According to M. De La Place none of the lenghths observed differ more than one tenth of a line from this rule, some being a little more and other a little less
