John Hunter to the American Philosophical Society (unpublished)
Leicester Square Decr 2, 1787
Sir

I feel myself much obliged to you for your very polite letter, acquainting me that I am elected a Member of the Philosophical Society in America: and I beg through you to return my thanks to the President, and Members of that Learned body for having conferrd upon me so distinguishd an Honor. I beg you will at the same time present the Society with a copy of my publications, and assure them that I should be happy could I in any way promote the intention of their establishment, but the pursuits in which I am engaged rather require assistance from America which contains an almost inexhaustible treasure hardly begun upon, consequently much is to be expected from the labours of the Society. If anything occurs in the line of Comparative Anatomy, or any enqueries connected with the Animal Oeconomy in which it is supposed my assistance can in the least be made use of, I shall very readily show my zeal for the Society by doing my utmost in support of its pursuits.

I have the Honor to be Sir Your Obedt Servant

John Hunter.
