From Robert Aitken (unpublished)
Sir,

Two years and eight Months ago, I received from the Philosophical Society an Order, on Francis Hopkinson Esqr. their Treasurer for £50 due to me from the Society, and I have likewise another in my possession (unpaid) for £25. The former was paid by me to Messrs. Khean & Attmore who received of it about £15, the remainder being Still unpaid. For this ballance of the £50, I am assured that a Suit will be immediately commenced against me. I have therefore to intreat, that the Society will speedily adopt some plan to prevent a Measure so Injurious to me, and which must be Derogatory to their own Honor. The Occasion being pressing, Must be my Apology for troubling the Society on this business. I have the Honor to be sir, Your Most Obedient Servant
