From James McLean (unpublished)
Philadelphia, October 3d, 1788.
Sir,

The debilitated State of the Invalid Guards doing duty under my command, and the approaching season induces me to lay before your Excellency & the Honorable the Council their particular wants, as specified in the return of Clothing presented the 30th alto. The Corps in General are in great need of Watch-coats, Blankets, Bed-caps, Woolen-gloves & Night-caps all which articles are highly necessary to enable them to do the duty those cold nights, more especially as they are much afflicted with the pains of their old wounds and other disorders contracted in the field. I would therefore beg leave to solicit your Hon’ble body to grant them such necessary relief as may appear to them adequate to their present necessities as some of them are entirely destitute of the above mentioned articles.

I have the honor to be, Sir, with great respect your Excellencies most ob’t h’ble Serv’t

James McLean
Capt. com’g P.I.G’s.
Addressed: His Excellency Benjamin Franklin, Esq’r, President in Council.
