Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes Jan. 23. 1783.
my dear Billy.

I have endeavoured to satisfy Mr. Hodgsons request by enquirys at L’orient without success. I am renvoyé to Bordeaux when I have written and as soon as possible I will give you the Result.

I mentioned in my last Commissions for 2 Brigs. The Olive Capt. Fletcher 8 Guns 25 Men property s. J. W & Sam. White Esqr. of Boston, & the Hetty same description & Owners. If there are no commissions—cannot the Doctor give me to each certifying the want of others, or will not a Copy of some other Commission certified by the Doctor answer the purpose. I send you 2 Copys of Commns. made from Capt. Johnsons of the Flora to serve if possible. I beg my dear Friend you will do your utmost in this matter & write me by return of Post for the Vessels are ready for Sea. It will be hard if they fall in with a Lame Duck to lose the prize for want of a Commission. I am Yours most affecty.

ps Everybody here says since ’Change that a General Peace was signed the 19th. Inst. if this is true my dear Friend get us passports instead of Commissions—read the inclosed to Vaughan & oblige me by doing all you can for Your afft. Friend
