From Whitchurch, William (unpublished)
[1783]
Sir,

The Bearer of the enclos’d is the person recommended to your kind notice therein; he has visited Paris to procure your indulgent Advice upon his much and long desir’d wish, to visit the Western Shores; and to acquire a knowledge in the French Language previous thereto: if he shou’d be so happy as to meet with your Countenance and Friendship, he will ever consider himself under the greatest Obligation.

He is one of a select few of young Englishmen, who wou’d wish to transport themselves with their little All to those Shores; and he has freely offer’d himself as their Harbinger, to consult and observe the propriety of the Remove.

He humbly waits your pleasure, to know if, and when, he may be indulged with an Interview; which will be ever acknowledged an Honor confer’d upon Sir, (with the greatest Respect) Your most obedient and very humble Servant

William Whitchurch.
