Jonathan Williams, Jr. to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Nantes Sept. 9. 1780.
my dear Billy

I have received both your obliging Favours of the 2d & 3d Inst. I am glad the Wine is agreeable to you, the Remainder of the Pipe will arrive to you soon, if you have not already received it, from Orleans. Mr Adams has the same Qty by the same conveyance, of which I send you a Note with a draft on him for the amount when you have received the amount I will again draw on you for both Sums & so finish the affair. Let me know if the Bordeaux wine is yet come to hand. If you wish to secure another Pipe or two of the Vidonia you must let me know in time.

The addition to Mrs Baches order was in consequence of a Letter I received from her of which I send an Extract inclosed. The Bills she mentions to have been sent were not sufficient to pay (by 360 Livres) for what I had before shipped. I therefore could not add to the List an Acct of the Bills as Mrs B probably intended, and I thought the Doctor would not be displeased at my sending the Things she appeared so much to want. I could not get a Captain to take the Ware & common china on acct of their great Bulk & little value, for the Freight is paid on Amount of the Invoice: I have a great deal of Ware ready to ship for my Friend but no Vessel will take it if I were to offer the whole cost of the Freight. I have recevd the Bills you returned, the last parcel came to hand to day, I find [out] among them credited as having been already paid, which I apprehend must by either through ignorance or roguery in the person in whose Favour it was drawn. I therefore find it [again] & request you to desire Mr Grand to look at the one which has been paid and give a note of all the Names which are on the back so that I may trace the Error or the Fraud whichever it maybe: It seems indeed necessary to write another circular Letter on this Subject, but I think I have done my part of the Business.—

I have no news. I am ever my dear Billy most sincerely & affectionately Yours.

Endorsed: ansd 25 sep. 1780—Jona. Williams Sept. 9 1780— Extract of a Letter from Mrs Sarah Bache dated Philadelphia 25 Septr 1779 I look upon myself much obliged to you for the Trouble you were at in procuring the Things my Father ordered, I expect them now every day, never could they have come at a more welcome Season, I have ventured to send for a few more necessary things which I suppose he will desire you to get. Sometime since Mr Bache wrote to you sent a list of things with Bills, as he heard nothing from you about them, he repeated it some few weeks ago, I hope the last letters will be more fortunate than the former, your kind offer of being usefull to me has induced me to send an Addition to the List of things which I really want, many cannot be bought here, and others are of such a price that it would be sinfull to give it were it in my Power.
