From Charles Hellstedt (unpublished)
Sir
North
Decr. 8. 1787

It is with no small concern I find myself under the necessity of complainning to your Excellency of the rough, rude and violant behaviour, committed in my house, by two Constables, belonging as they said to Justice Jame Lougheads Office, who this morning dragged out of the house John Bergman, who acts as servant to me; My hearing a noice, and comeing out speedily, prevented however a blow aimed at said Bergman by a stick lifted up, takeing place, at the hazard of receiving it myself. They two men said they came for taxes. Bergman is not taxable. I hope your Excellency will use legal authority to prevent such extravagancies, by such means as may to your Excellency seem fit, in order to present the violation of the Laws of nations, under which I thought I sat Safe. The Bearer, Bergman will mention the names of the men. I am with due respect Your Excellencies most obedient most humble Servant
