From Samuel Mather (unpublished)
London 19th July 1789.
Sir

My Friend Robert Young Esqr. of Warwick Court Holborn having lately published an Essay on the Powers and Mechanism of Nature, in which he has advanced some new and very important Doctrines, which he is desirous of submitting to the investigation of the Philosophers on your side of the Atlantick, has desired me to distribute a few of them to the Persons whom I should know to be the most eminent for their knowledge in and love of the Sciences. I am therefore to request that Your Excellency will be pleased to accept of the Book inclosed herewith from him. I have likewise inclosed for Your Excellency’s perusal the first Report of the London Philanthropic Society of which Mr. Young was the Institutor.

If Your Society should think proper to elect my ingenious Friend, I believe I may say he will do honor to them as a Member.

If You should be so obliging as to acknowledge the receipt of my Letter be pleased to direct for me to the care of Saml. Rogers Esqr. No. 23 Charlotte Street, Portland Place as I am going a Journey on a Visit into the western Counties and can’t possibly say when I shall be in London again.

I am very happy in having this Opportunity of assuring You that I am with very great Respect and Esteem Sir Your Excellency’s most obedient and most humble Servant

Saml. Mather
