From John Hallinan (unpublished)
To the Honorable Benjamin Franclin Commissioner for the United States of British America and to his Excellency the Marquis de la Fayette Colonel of Dragoons. The following Verses are humbly inscribed By their most humble & devoted Servant John Hallinan

Graecia Solones jactat, jactare Camillos

Gaudet Roma suos, at surgeret altior omni

Utraque laude, sinae si docta tullisset Alumnum

Graecia Franclinum, bellatrix Roma Fayetam.

Greece rais’d by Solon to immortal Fame

Greece justly venerates great Solon’s name.

Rome her Camillus boasts whose conqu’ring hand

Restor’d fair Freedom to her fav’rite land.

Such, such to boast no former Age deserv’d

That Glory for the present was reserv’d.

In Franclin Solon’s Genïus breathes as yet,

And Europe views Camillus in Fayette.

Honourable sir/

I had lately the honour of being presented to his Excellency the Marquis de la Fayette. I flatter myself that before now he has spoke to you of, Honorable Sir, Your most humble and devoted Servant

John Hallinan
