Memorial in favour of Counte Macdonald Captaine with majors rank in the french Service Adresed to the honorable Doctor franklin Deputies of the united provinces of America, here follows an Account of his Services, and what he proposes for perfection Discipline if found capable to serve the united provinces to whom he offers his Service.

Count Macdonald is in the french Service Since the 1st of January 1756, Served the last Warr in Germany, was twice wounded, Served the Campaignes of 1760 and 1761 as Ayde de camp to the Marishall Duke of Broglio, in the year 1765 Commanded a Corp of 300 Chasseurs in the Expedition of Larache Against the Saltins made Ayde major of the Regiment de foix of two Battalions the 18th of 8 ber 1765. In the year 1767 and 1768 formed two Corps by Order of the Duke of Choiseuil on a new plan of Discipline, Got in Consequence a major Brevit, Served with his regiment in Corsica three Campaignes, in the year 1771 the Confederats of Polland obtained from the Court of france capable Officers to command, train and Discipline the troops, he was sent in Consequence incognito with One and twenty french Officers to Polland, in the Siege of Cracau he was Town major, for by had the Command of 400 Grenadiers, and lastly employed as Engenier notwithstanding his Commander that number being scarce, During the Siege he was wounded in the right Shoulder, Counte Macdonald Speaks five languages, Draws plans, understands perfectly Enginery and Artilery, he is well Acquainted with the best Antient and modern Authors that have wrote on the art of warr. One and twenty years Constant Aplication, and Experience with a thorough knowledge of German, french and Prussian Discipline, after a Solid Study, and most Exacte Examination of all the different methods of discipline in Europe, has formed a new plan more easy and surer for training, Exercising, and Discipling troops, and bringing them in Shorter time than usual in every point whatsoever to the Greatest perfection, he hath likewise a new plan for the instruction of the Officers will teach them in a short time with great ease the reale deffence and attaque of ports, to take advanteage of different Situations and positions, to march their troops with Advantage in every manner Imaginable, Shall gave them a martial and brief   very Uniform and necessary for Commanding. Count Macdonald will undergo any Examination, will produce his Commissions and the best and authentick Certificats as proof of his good and personal Character, as ane officer, Service, Capacity and talents. His new plan of tactique Concerns both Infantry and Cavalry, favours their mutual Connection and how to be Exercised, Amalgamed or mixed for action, hill shew how the Artilery should be plassed in line or Column with more advantage than has been used hitherto, his plan is Short easy and Sure, founded on Geometrical proportions and fixed principals, in every motion even of the firelocks he hath Consulted the structure and anatomy of different men to render the motions more easy less awkward and less fatigueing to the Soldiers, each positions attitude or motion whatsoever shall be found Gracefull and natural, and every body shall admire the quickness and Justess of performance and the greatest uniformity of each time either for the manual exercise, manoeuvres, marching, evolutions and Camping, hill give the different performance of Columns and Changes of fronts in any Situations when and how to be practised for the Ennemy; hill likewise give the different changes of directions in line or Column in face of ane ennemy, by one ore several Regiments, and will give the method of the great point de vue, marching on parralels and the Oblique so often practised with Success by the King of prussia, hill give likewise the method and perfection of all the firings possible to be used with advantage in line or Column; hill shew in a new Clever and regular manner how to passe a river in prescence of an Ennemy for to attaque, shall shew likewise how to repasse a river having it in the Rear facing notwithstanding an Ennemy’s pursuit, shall shew how to draw up in Battle in the different Situation and position of ground, especially longeing the sides of rivers,   and   to stope the Ennemy and begin a new attaque. His plan which is to make more brave and   for action will prove if followed how a Smal Army in many Occasions will take advantage of a greater. All Consists in discipline and never in number. Hill give likewise an easy, sure and regular method of Subsistance either in Garrison or Campaigne. Count Macdonald will Suffer his plan to be Examined by any body of the Art, and to be Condemned if found Iregullar, hill prove and shew how a line never so Extensive shall march the different steps    fife or Drum in the greatest order, time and uniformity with very closs ranks and files, the different steps for marching are proportionally measured and a fixed progression of time in each minute, his School of officers and soldiers shall be found short easy and avoid of any thing tedious or minuties, all his rules tending to the real perfection of discipline, without which no army can stand his ground, hill put any Regiment or Corp whatsoever in a very Short time in greatest order, and Shall acquire by his lessons a most martial and soldier look, major Macdonald desires only to be Employed Beggs the most potent and honorable Congress of the united and independent provinces of America to Confide to his instruction and Command a body of men to Shew in who Short a time hill bring them to perfection and to Execute for action the different Articles above mentioned, before all he begs leave to prevent that his plan will bring no Alteration nor retard in the Journal Operations, Duty shall go on as usual, more Exacte and regular indeed and Discipline brought to the utmost perfection. Strickness, Resolution and Severity are the Soul of military Discipline; by those means an Army shall in all tims be in good order.
