Henry Smeathman to William Temple Franklin (unpublished)
Hotel D’Espagne, Rue Guénégaud. Monday 29. Sept. 1783.

Mr. Smeathman presents his respectful compliments to Mr Franklin, he has been desirous for three or four mornings past to pay his respects at Passy but something or another has always intervened and prevented him.

The chief hindrance has been the business of a particular friend who cannot speak French. That friend sets off for London on Wednesday or Thursday next. If his Excellency or Mr. Franklin have any commands they may be assured that he will deliver them most punctually. Tomorrow Mr. Smeathman hopes the hurry of business will be over and that he shall have the honor to take a dish of tea with Dr. Franklin on Wednesday morng.
