From Francis Childs (unpublished)
New York Aug. 24th. 1786.
Dear Sir

Since Yours of the 27th. ult. and mine of the 5th current I have not had much to inform you. By the London Ship, that have sailed, I have been careful to send Mr. Larsom the Papers, &c.

I consulted Mr. Jay some days since on the misfortune of my not being able to make good my engagement—He advised me to inform you candidly—and presumed that I need not be uneasy, as your indulgence would be obtained. When I sold my Office last spring it was for £180—and the payments were to correspond with those I am to make you. But owing to the great delay of the Types and Sorts not arriving as I expected, I could not deliver the Letter agreeable to contract—and for that delay payment is now kept back. Mr. Kollock to whom I sold a Principal part, will not make payment before the beginning of October. To this time I solicit your indulgence. But Sir while I do this, if the request does not meet your approbation, I will endeavour, by some means or other, immediately to accomplish the payment now due. My Subscriptions are mostly unpaid; These I can collect, tho’ not so soon, perhaps, as would be satisfactory.

Mr. Swain who will deliver you this is a young gentleman who served his time with me at Mr. Dunlap’s—and under him is the present Printer to Congress. He has lived with me for near 18 months and to him Sir I beg leave to refer you for such information as you may wish.

If the Imperfections are ready please to let Mr. Swain have them, who will forward the same to me; And any marks of attention shewn him will be considered as additional favors conferred on Dear Sir Your Most obedient and Grateful Servant

Francis Childs
