From William Short (unpublished)
Paris May 5. 1787
Sir

Since the departure of Mr. Norris who took charge of a letter for Your Excellency, I have recieved from Mr. Le Roi the package and letter which I have the honor of forwarding by the French Consul at New-York.

Of the diplomas for the European members of your Philosophical Society which arrived here some time ago, most of them have been delivered to their respective addresses, some have been returned because the persons were dead, and the rest remain here because the persons to whom they are addressed are entirely unknown.

I am very happy to have once more an opportunity of assuring you Sir of those sentiments of profound respect with which I have the honor to be Your Excellency’s most obedient and humble servant
