From John Paul Jones (unpublished)
Paris July 15th. 1785.
Dear Sir,

As your correspondence with the Minister of Denmark on the subject of my Prizes, that were given up to the British by his Court, in the Port of Bergen in Norway, was packed up and sent away for America before you selected the Papers you sent me the 9th of this Month; Mr. Jefferson, to whom I have communicated those Papers, is of opinion, that a Certificate from you, of the substance and time of your Correspondence with Danish Ministers, with the offer that was made to you from the Danish Court, of a sum of Money, as a gratification for the value of those Prizes, and for the affront shown by Denmark to the Flag of America, would be of singular Service in the satisfaction that is proposed to be demanded, either by Mr. Adams, through the Danish Minister at London, or by myself at the Court of Denmark; I shall esteem it a particular favor if you can find a leasure Moment, before you embark, to write and send me the best Certificate you can on that Subject.

I am, with the most affectionate wishes for your happiness, Dear Sir, your most obedient and most humble Servant

Paul Jones

His Excellency B. Franklin Esqr., Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States &c.
