From — Garnier (unpublished)

Honourable sir

Though neither a rich nor a nobleman born, yet do I chearfully desire in this time of war, to get useful, and if necessary to shed till the very last drop of my blood either for my king’s or for his allies’s service; thus consequently I most humbly require your kindness for my obtaining a commission in the American army.

I have been six years in a regiment of dragoons. You may be certain, honourable Sir, that I shall always behave like an honest man and a brave officer. I speak the English tongue without any foreign accent, and this I Suppose will be of no little recommendation. I’ll be in town next Wednesday to wait upon immediately according to your answer, which I’ll expect with the utmost impatience. I hope, Sir, that you’ll not deny Your most humble and most obedient servant
